Fed: Timor gun buy back could work - Keelty

Federal Police commissioner MICK KEELTY says a gun buy back in East Timor could work
to reduce the amount of violence in the troubled nation.

Australia's nearest neighbour has been wracked by violence since soldiers began arguing
amongst themselves in April.

Mr KEELTY has told ABC radio it's clear there are far too many weapons on the street
in East Timor.

JOHN HOWARD held a gun buy back in the wake of Australia's worst massacre .. when MARTIN
BRYANT killed 35 people at Port Arthur in Tasmania in 1996.

Mr KEELTY says he still has strong memories of the Australian buy back .. and a similar
program in East Timor could stem the violence.
