Elwell gift to gallery.

A PAINTING by Beverley's best-known artist, Fred Elwell, has been donated to Beverley Art Gallery.

The oil painting is a portrait of Mrs Annie Elizabeth Todd of Beverley, painted in 1932 when she was 94 years old.

The picture has been bequeathed to the gallery by Stephen Todd, Annie Elizabeth's grandson. Mrs Todd was a friend of the Elwells.

Previously on a five-year loan, the donated portrait is now on display and the gallery is planning to have some conservation work carried out on it.

East Riding Council, which owns the gallery, has a collection of about 65 paintings by Elwell (1870 to 1958), who lived at Bar House in the town and …
