Fed: Latham says get politics out of ABC

Opposition Leader MARK LATHAM has flagged a shake-up at the Australian Broadcasting
Corporation under a Labor government.

Mr LATHAM says both the HOWARD government and previous Labor governments stacked the
ABC board with political appointments and that has to stop.

He says Labor wants to see public broadcasting as a major institution in Australia
rather than something that's run down in funding and loss of independence.

Mr LATHAM, speaking last night on ABC TV's Lateline program, said the ABC is one of
Australia's most important national institutions.

The opposition leader has ruled out a move to advertising on the ABC under Labor, but
was coy on whether there would be a funding boost for the national broadcaster.
