Fed: Governor-General wishes people safe new year
Governor-General PETER HOLLINGWORTH wishes Australians a safe and happy new year while
sympathising with victims of the Christmas bushfires.

Dr HOLLINGWORTH used his Centenary year closing address to the nation to urge people
to reflect on the good times of 2001.

He says that in 2001 Australians had gained a sense of what was possible when their
ultimate goal centred on unity and community well-being.

Dr HOLLINGWORTH says while world terrorism and human suffering is disturbing, the
year is ending on a confident note with the Peoplescape exhibition in Canberra.

He says Australians can take pride in their achievements in the century and have another
chance to focus on values and aspirations people have in common during the Year of the
Outback.

Following the broadcast message, Dr HOLLINGWORTH said he and his wife Ann expressed
their deep sympathy to people who lost their homes and treasured possession in the bushfires.
