NSW: Killick appeals 28 year sentence
One month after his lover LUCY DUDKO was found guilty of plucking him from jail in
a helicopter, armed robber JOHN KILLICK has appeared in court appealing his sentence.
Flanked by six correctional officers, KILLICK was in the New South Wales Court of Criminal
Appeal challenging his minimum 15-year, maximum 28-year sentence on the grounds of severity.
Late last year he pleaded guilty to escaping from Silverwater jail on March 25, 1999,
assaulting the helicopter pilot and the armed robbery of a man whose car he commandeered.
He also pleaded guilty to the offences which put him in jail - armed robbery of two
banks and discharging a firearm with intent to avoid arrest.
Representing himself, KILLICK has told the appeal court the sentencing judge made mistakes
about the length of his criminal record.
KILLICK says there were 26 and not 42 criminal cases against him.
He also says the evidence from his witnesses had been rejected unfairly by the sentencing judge.
His appeal his continuing.
KILLICK has spent 37 years in jail and will be 72 when next eligible for parole.
DUDKO, a 42-year-old Russian librarian, will face a sentencing hearing in June after
a jury found her guilty of staging the March 1999 jail break.
